if the piston is scored or pitted you can have it welded/flame sprayed
and ground. :)
or, since you're doing it yourself you could JB weld it. it's not in a
demanding service environment (like a crank bearing), so the lifetime
of the repair should be pretty long (years). i have used a razor blade
to spread and sculpt it to match piston diameter (blade is pointed
axially, rotate piston under it). a little light sanding to make sure
it's smooth and you'll be good to go.
