[alfa] Air conditioning question (No Alfa content)

Andrew-
The system in your Jeep is R-12. You may NOT, under any circumstances, mix different types of refrigerants in the system. The "kits" that Walmart sells are R-134, which is the refrigerant currently used by OEM and approved by the EPA. You may NOT vent either R-12 or R-134 into the atmosphere intentionally. If the system needs to be broken into, special recovery equipment is needed to remove R-12 or R-134.

If your system is basically sound and just very slowly leaked down over the years, I'd just take it to a certified auto air mech and have him top off the charge with R-12. R-12 is relatively expensive compared to the other refrigerants, but if you just need 16 oz or so to bring the system back, it's cheap.

If you contemplate converting to R-134, be advised it's not as simple as the cheapo Walmart kits make you think. Do a web search on "R-134 conversion" and you'll get a good idea of what really needs to be done to convert a system without damaging it.
