Do *you* know the mechanic?  The PO's opinion of a knowledgable mechanic and
yours might differ.

Personally, I'd go through the pump adjustment procedure, it's not difficult
and only takes an hour or so.  All of the settings build one on another, if
one of the early baselines is off then you'll never get the pump running
correctly, no matter how much you dink with the visible screws.
