[alfa] Re: 164 Tensioner stud sourcing?
IMHO that you boys may own engines that have been 'dorked' and/or you
would do well to re-examine your circumstances employing a proper thread
gauge. The correct thread on the cam cover fasteners (164 & Verde)
I measured only moments ago is 7mm x 1 - and it may be the same for the
detensioner locking stud. BTW, this is an obtainable Helicoil size. As
you most likely know, fasteners of this size were also chosen to attach
the sump and to assemble the coolant thermostat housing. You ask why but
as an ME you already know the answer - fasteners are chosen to meet a
design strength requirement. In this case, 6mm would be too small and
8mm would have been way too large. Note that while I have disassembled
several of these engines, I have yet to find a 7mm fastener with a 1.25
pitched thread - but there is always tomorrow. Basking in the 'Show Me'

are you (at)? I have a 7x1.25 tap and die you can use for the cost of
shipping. Of course I'll need them back. Incidentally, I'm working on my
rebuilt heads from IAP and found that several of the cam cover threads
were stripped in the head. You won't guess the size? Yup, 7x1.25.
Sometimes I shake my head at the thread choices that Alfa made on several
applications. Being a mechanical engineer myself, I gotta ask what the
hell were they thinking? Anyone know if a 7x1.25 helicoil exists? - -Lalo
