[alfa] Re: Head washers

The thin ones actually go between the lift strap and the head nut.

Before you assemble the lift strap get a piece of glass (a good flat surface) and some 220 wet or dry sand paper. Sand the lift strap where it will contact the head in order to get a good flat surface. If you dont you may leak coolant from this location.

Be sure to put anti-sieze on the washers and the threads before assembly.

Torque in 4 steps to 64 ft lbs. Using the following sequence.

9 10
5 6
1 2
4 3
8 7

Retorque after motor is hot without loosening the nuts.

Retorque Cold after 500 miles. Loosen each nut before tightening. Open radiator cap before to reduce coolant leakage during retorque.

Most books show the wrong sequence.

If you are using a Factory head gasket be sure that there is adhesive fully around the rear oil drain holes (closest to the back of the motor). If not apply Permatex Ultra Grey sparingly in this area just prior to assembly (do not let it dry before assembly).

I use Alfa Parts brass inserts for the 6 orings between the head and the block.
