[alfa] spider: Oil filter exploding... need help

I need help and I am totally loss.

I rebuild my 2 liter engine during the winter and replaced all, except the oil
pump because oil pressure was perfect before the rebuilding of the engine.

I started the engine for the first time 2 weeks ago, and I had 1 hour drive
around home. I followed the breaking procedure from Rex Chalmers (Alfacentro).
Yesterday, after 12 days sitting in my garage (I was travelling in Europe), I
started the spider and. No oil pressure, huge oil leak at the filter. In fact
the oil filter (Bosch) exploded..

I went to my local Bosch filter reseller and he told me that this is the
result of a sticked pressure valve in the pump. Is it right?

Is there any other fix than replacing the pump? I removed the lower sump pan
yesterday, but it seem that I should remove too the upper pan to get access to
the pump. Any tip ?

Can I assume that this was simply related to the "start up of the engine after
it rebuilt" such as oil impurities and hence and can refit a new filter and
oil and hope for the best?

Any comment will be appreciated.
