Sounds like there is plenty of advice that would point to the fuel filter being clogged. Personally, I don't bother trusting either the fuel gauge or the low fuel light. I just use the tripmeter and reset it post fill up. I usually fill up between 250-280 miles. I have heard that you have better luck not sucking any crud out of the gas tank if you don't run it close to empty.
