Fuel Pump

My 72 Stag is having big time fuel pump problems. It keeps stopping or
cutting out and if I get out and tap the fuel pump it starts up again. I
pulled the cover off the points and they are quite badly pitted. I filed
them up as best as I could but I am still having the same intermittent
operation. I will have to buy some new points and pull the pump down to
examine it. Would I be better to buy a new modern style pump or try to
repair mine. I dont have any experience with repairing the SU pump other
than the points end of it.
Somebody mentioned that the modern pumps would need to be mounted low as
they dont suck well they only really push. Any suggestions?
