From what you say, either the internal pipes have been transposed
(possible) or more probably the rear clutch is slipping.  This on its own
causes the 'box to change down as I previously said, the overheating oil is
just one more symptom.

As you say, a little piece of fluff can cause problems in the auto 'box,
getting in the ports and valve seats.
