No way I know of telling if your gears are stripping.  If you are
concerned, you'll never be happy until you whip it out to have a look.

Metallugrgists can usually be found in Yellow Pages and are in most
industrial centres.  They can do a quick Rockwell test and tell you what
the surface hardness is, and its suitability for the use to which it has
been put.
