Grinding noise above 2800 rpm

Hi Gerry

I was close to Montreal last week visiting a TSR member, had I known you
were in trouble then .............

Your engine sounds fine, on the basis of the info you have supplied so far
so I would not naturally assume it is the engine.

Incidentally, the sump will come off after you drop the axle cross-member,
but due to oil/dirt accumulation which just can't be blown off properly
before you do this, it really is better and in the end quicker to pull the
engine out of the top, complete with transmission (assuming you have access
to heavy lifting gear).

So I would look in the transmission for your problems. Continuing Tim's
advice, it is possible the drive plate in the torque convertor has broken -
but why it should have done this I could not say as I am assuming yours is
a standard installation.

More likely there is contact between the engine/transmission and the body.

Look at engine and gearbox mounts, where the exhaust goes through the rear
subframe and anything falling off the body onto rotating parts.

Check all visible bearings including wheel bearings and all drive shaft
universal joints and sliding joints. Pay particular attention to the
sliding joints on the axle shafts, a lot of vertical play here causes much
vibration and low thrumming noise. Also check rear brake shoes are not
stuck 'on' due to rust siezure (free-wheel and check heat of drums) and
tyre treads are OK (often a source of extreme noise if in poor shape).

Then take your car to an auto transmission specialist and ask for their
suggestions.

Hope the above helps.
