Chris,

There is a breather pipe which goes from the top of the tank into the
main filler tube which allows air to come out whilst petrol goes in.
There is another breather which goes from the filler neck via a filter
through the boot floor (this allows for air to get in as petrol goes out
and the filter stops dirt being sucked into the tank).

There is also a drain tube which is frequently missing. This goes from
the filler neck and through the boot floor. This drains any water or
petrol which has collected in the filler bowl. If this pipe is missing
any petrol spilt during filling will drain into the boot, thus causing a
smell and rain water will rot the boot floor !
