Re: Head tightening sequence

Hi Al

I'm getting the digest OK, but judging by the infuriating number of
messages coming through saying 'test', there are a lot of guys who aren't!
The other thing is the digests seem to be so long, my CompuSereve software
is turning them into a file called mail.txt. This is all very well, but
the next one received dumps itself over the top of the 'old' one,
obliterating it! Try looking for that file in your download directory. I
get the message;

"*** File Message ***

The size of the file is 33432 bytes.
The file will be stored in D:\CSERVE\DOWNLOAD\Mail.txt

Additional Information:
The message text was too large so it was converted to a file."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As for the 'head' details, here it is again;
"Interestingly, the reconditioners all reckon the Stag heads do not need
re-tightening and to a degree I agree with them.
"However, it is also true that Stag head gaskets do tend to weep slightly
either shortly after fitment or at any time in their service life and on
all Stags I have seen so far with this problem, all have responded well to
slackening the nuts by one flat and re-torquing.
"Oh, the official Triumph recommendation was shown in Service Information
Bulletin Volume 2 item 6.  It recommended that cylinder heads on ALL
Triumph engines were re-torqued within 1000 miles of new, with the proviso
that aluminium heads must be done only when cold.  The method of doing this
is as previously explained (they however made no recommendation regarding
'stepping' the torque when fitting new gaskets which is only my own
recommendation).
"Summarising, if the cylinder head gasket replacement is done A-one and the
mechanical parts are perfect, a re-tighten should not really be necessary.
However, a procedure such as I have suggested will not deteriorate the head
gasket condition and may very well considerably enhance the life of the
head gaskets."
Please let me know if I can supply any more information.
Mike
