You are very close on this one.

Probably you have a recon auto box and the wrong dipstick tube and/or
dipstick is fitted.

You may have the right components but the tube split inside the 'box.

I suggest you start off by draining the 'box and refilling to the correct
AMOUNT as shown in the manual, and see what it does.

If you have been short of oil, it won't have done the 'box much good, and a
change of oil is definitely in order.
