Hello Larry,
    The cord may serve one of two functions:
1.  If it is installed where the chrome strip goes and is a durable
piece, it is there to replace the chrome strip if you do not have one;
2.  If it is installed in the seam that goes onto the windscreen frame
edge, it is most likely an aid for fitting the windscreen seal if it has
longer pieces sticking out, just like using a cord to mount the whole
mess as in the ROM.
