I'm just wild about Saffron......

Greetings Staggers!
Well, it's bonus time in corporate America, which means that I can run
some illicit funds into to my Nicaraguan Contra slush fund account and
hopefully have Mellow Yellow up and running in time for the beautiful
Carolina Spring (which sometimes starts at New Years.....)  

I appreciate all of the postings, but I have to admit that I am the true
neophyte when it comes to things mechanical.  Evidently it is not
genetic, as dear old Dad was an airplane mechanic in WWII.  

My general question is this:  My car, in nearly restored condition, has
not been on the road for nearly three years.  I was able to complete a
frame on restoration and engine rebuild (ie I dissolved all life savings
just prior to getting married) prior to going to graduate school, at
which time I became the consummate starving student, complete with wife
and young child.......So hear I am, trying to get her back on the road
now that I have become more adept at hiding automotive expenditures from
the wife....

What are some of the things that I need to be attentive to as I put her
back on the road?  We are replacing the steering rack, as well as all of
the hoses (dry rot).  In addition, I will regrease the wheel splines,
replace the fuel pump, tune the carbs and replace some or all of the
exhaust system (the postings about exhaust have been great).  What else
should we attack, given that the car has been in hibernation for a
while?

Second question:  What is the group's general opinion about engine
treatments?  IE Slick 50, etc.  I was laid up sick a couple of weeks ago
and found myself watching an infomercial on Prolong engine treatment-I
am usually skeptical of any product that advertises on Infomercials, but
the case they put forward was fairly compelling .  In college I drove a
1.6L subura, and I could tell a difference when I treated the motor with
Slick 50.  I would appreciate the group's thoughts on this, as anything
that makes the Stag run cooler is a good thing... Also, has anyone heard
of Watter Wetter?  It is a product that is distributed by Red Line in
the US and you add it to antifreeze and water and it is supposed to aid
in heat dissipation thereby lowering engine temps.  I have a good friend
you races VW Corrado's and he swears by it, I would love to hear the
group's opinions about engine and coolant additives.
