Re: [ihc] New Guy Question
Randy-
There are three quick checks to tell which V8 engine you have. IH engines
are larger than their counterparts in that a 5 liter (304) IH engine weighs
200+ lbs more than a ford, chevy, mopar, amc, or other common American made
V8. The same thing is true of a 5.6 (345) compared to a 350 chevy or 351
ford, etc.
The 73 pickups and travelalls sometimes had AMC 401 V8 engines. This was due
to a shortage of 392 engines. These are "small block" engines, nowhere near
as big as a small IH V8 engine. If this is the case, the valve covers will
not have INTERNATIONAL stamped into them in cursive.
If you have an IH engine, it's most likely a 304 or 345. There are two easy
ways to identify these engines.
On the back of the block, there are two pointed protrusions. If the distance
between them is 7 inches, you have a 304. If they are 8 inches apart, you
have a 345. If you find it's a 304 by this method, you're done.
I have bought two 392 engines with 2 barrel carbs on them, but neither came
that way from the factory. A 345 manifold and 392 manifold are
interchangeable, so it "could" be you have a 392. If so, the next check will
tell you:
The other method is the "engine ID pad" located above the fuel pump, top of
the block, right side, near where the head and block meet, below the number
2 exhaust port.
A link to the ID methods on www.binderbulletin.org/ (bookmark this, you will
need it) is as follows:

Subject: [ihc] New Guy Question
Just bought my first IH, a '73 1110 4x4. How can I tell which motor it
has?
It's a v8 with a 2 barel but I don't know if it a 345 or not. The air
cleaner is not the original and there are no obvious stickers.
