RE: [ihc] 1941 International Harvester : Other Models K1 7-Pass . (ebay)
Jim:
We shouldn't have to warn all the well seasoned IH folks on this list about
EBAY. But, caveat emptor applies more there than just about anywhere else
you can buy something today in my book.
I've purchased quite a few things off EBAY and only been disappointed in
what I received two of those times. I can't say that either was a rip off,
but probably more communication issues.
I'm on another list where a few members have purchased rare autos off of
EBAY. In one case, the purchaser diligently had an independent mechanic in
the state the car was located in evaluate the vehicle he was bidding on as
his fiduciary. This was a shop he had researched and been recommended to
with a supposed quality reputation. The purchaser ending up paying a
serious premium of about $10,000 for a car that supposedly had only 17,000
original miles on it. The shop "verified" that.
After the car was delivered, the buyer immediately realized that the car was
very nice, but not as described. There were a lot more miles on it than
17,000. The odometer had been tampered with. The purchaser contacted
authorities who attempted to take some action, but this was across state
lines. The authorities in the sellers state even cooperated, saying that
this seller had been brought to their attention before and was in cahoots
with the shop that independently certified the vehicle for the purchaser.
The seller ended up filing a lawsuit against the seller and the shop. I
don't know if they've ever recovered anything, but I know he rants and raves
against buying anything on EBAY that isn't local as your recourse is
seriously limited.
