Re: [ihc] questions about older motor designations
Since the letter designation engines originated 30 to 50 years before I
started with IH and disappeared into the color designations 25+ years
before, I have no clue as to their meaning. You'll have to find someone
MUCH older than I to ask that question of (Hofs? :-) ). In fact, I
probably never had contact with anyone who was there when those engines
were being built so they were ancient history--well, I do know one guy
who started at IH about 1930 after getting laid off from Auburn Motors
who is still kicking around at the age of 93 and I'll ask him, but having
been a millwright in the plant, It doesn't seem likely he'd be familiar
with details like this..
I would expect there was probably some system of assigning the codes, but
it could have been just sequential letters like the model designations
and had no meaning like the SV, MV, and LV. In my time there, I never
heard of the older engines before the color designations and there was no
info around on the older ones until I saw all of them in Crismon and put
them all in the one list that I posted just to try to sort out what was
what for myself.
