thanks for the info and link, Dan.  that's an excellent resource.  i'm
having a good time learning to use the interface, and at the same time
designing a replacement gear for my broken PTO winch.  once i figured out
how to use the various tool applets and bits and bobs in the program, it was
fairly simple to design the gear.  it isn't perfect yet, but i have most of
it done.  all that's left to do is set the correct pitch (is that the right
term?  i mean the angle of slant to the teeth), and it's done.

an excellent program, and they have decent pricing too, according to their
website.  if the design turns out, and it's not terribly expensive to mill
the gear, my winch will be fixed thanks to these guys.
