i just opened up my B series Operator's Manual to see where it says what Jim
says it does. it's on page 28, and it's pretty clear. there's a picture of
the little cover, plus the marks on the flywheel. the book also has a lot
of information on all the available engines, transmissions, usage,
maintenance, etc. very useful manual. i highly recommend picking one up if
possible for each truck or truck type in the fleet.

as you're looking at the marks, there should be a little "0" with two dots
on one side and one dot on the other side. the "0" is 6 degrees BTDC, the
single dot is 9 degrees, the first dot on the two-dot side is 4 degrees
BTDC, and the second dot is 2 degrees. this manual says to time the BD264
at the second dot from the "0", or 2 degrees BTDC.

on the idle issue, i was never able to get my BD to idle reliably or
smoothly below about 550rpm (despite what the manual says it should do). i
rebuilt the carb twice, set the timing, points, everything i could think
of... it was a no-go. i generally kept it around 600rpm or so and it did
just fine.
