YES

find the short - *you have an intermittant dead short*

i had an intermittant short near the alternator - the alternator output wire (which is always +12 hot) melted onto the 
exhaust

and also the sense wire pigtail melted

causing

the fusible link that is bundled in with the other regular wires (stupid!!)

to MELT

the fusible link is in the wire bundle from the top of the firewall down to the starter

(Gee I wonder why my starter didn't work right and the ammeter was PEGGING so hard I could hear it)

I found and fixed all the shorts and melted wires and replaced the fusible link - I think I took it out of the bundle 
and kept it separate
