=Subject: [ihc] Power Steering Input Shaft size?????

=Is there any rule of thumb for the input shaft diameter on a power steering
=box for a Scout II/Traveler?
=snippe=

=So, is there any other characteristic I can look for to determine?

=Thanks!

Joel,

You probably know this already.

There are two sizes of Scout II PS box input shafts.
Older Scout II PS box used a 13/16" diameter input shaft with 36 splines.
Later model SII PS box used a smaller 3/4" input shaft with 30 splines.

I dont know the cutoff date, and your box may not be original anyway.

I dont know of any surefire external clues to the shaft size.

Quick way to check the diameter (if easily accessable, sounds like yours
isnt), slip a 3/4 socket or open/boxed wrench over the shaft to ID the size.

If a 3/4 wont fit.......................

If thats not possible because its installed (sounds like your situation), try
to use calipers, outside mic, or a really thin 3/4 open end wrench to slide
over the shaft between the box and the rag joint.
