[ihc] Jason's throttle response(not)

Subject: [ihc] Throttle response
Alright, thanks to my savior who told me to check for a vacuum leak... found
one. Fixed it... now, at idle, vacuum pressure is 24. When I shift into
gear,
it drops to 15. Is that about right? Couldn't find specs anywhere.
Everything else seems to be going okay. However, I have some sort of
throttle
response problem now. If I push it in quickly, it is like a huge lag and
drop
in everything, then it either will die or will slowly respond. Any ideas on
this?
Thanks,
Jason
Jason, if this is a SII with the stock Holley 2210 carb, the accelerator
pump is notorious for being marginal at best. IMHO it is an ill-conceived
design that depends on the release of pressure from the acc. pump spring for
the pump shot. Even IH got to the point in service bulletins of recommending
the acc. pump stroke be adjusted to absolute maximum in an attempt to
address driveability complaints, and that was when the trucks were almost
new! The Rube Goldberg 'dogleg' link to the acc pump is susceptible to
getting mangled by well meaning 'technicians', and no 2 carb kit
instructions seem to agree on which slot to install it in :( . There's
prolly no avoiding putting a kit in the carb if it hasn't been done lately,
the 2210's I have seem to want a fresh kit just about yearly. My Traveler is
about a year overdue, so I have a patented throttle technique to get a
double or triple shot from the pump when needed ;). When you're in there,
don't ignore the pump intake check ball setup spec. If the clearance is too
big, a bunch of the pump shot sneaks out before the check ball closes. When
you set up the pump stroke, go for the maximum travel you can get, and set
the linkage so that the pump operates as quickly as possible. If you're not
bound to keep the 2210 for smog reasons, a Holley 2300 or Motorcraft 2bbl
are 'known good' choices for replacement. I have a fresh Motorcraft that's
going on the Traveler as soon as I get past this years smog check.
