Re: [ihc] "stuck valves"

Is it 10 minutes of idling, or 10 minutes on the highway?

My bet is it's none of the problems he thinks it is.. it's probably shot cam bearings and/or plugged oil returns.. when cold, there's oil in the pan and enough oil to pump up the lifters.. after a few minutes of flogging, the oil is either all in the heads, or it's thinned enough that there's not enough pressure (thanks to the poor tolerances on the cam bearings) to pump up the lifters.

This results in the valves not opening like they should, which makes a miss, and which "self governs" the engine.

I have a 304 and a 345 that are both like this. I pulled 14,000lbs with the 345 all the way to Colorado and back with no problems. The 304 took me to work today.

With the gearing on these rigs, the 345 T'ette wouldn't do more than ~65mph, and the Scout is stuck around 55mph from the poor top end oiling.

Figure you guys might know what this is.... have an opinion formed already,
but figure you guys might know these symptoms better than me. He's about to
buy an adapter kit to put a 402 BB chevy into the scout because the 402 is
rebuilt already and he doesn't want to rebuild the 345 if that's what it's
going to take to fix it...

opinions? reccomendations?

Thanks,
Ryan

The 345 runs fine while the engine is still cool. After about 30 minutes of
run time, either valves or lifters on the left side of the engine stick, and
the engine misses. You can definitly feel a difference in exhaust pressure
between the duals. I havent done a compression test yet, with all the smog
junk around the ex manifold, I'm sure to burn the crap out of my hands. I
have tried tranny fliud in the oil, and have used oil detergent, and the only
difference seems to be that the valves get sticky after ten minutes of run
time.
