RE: [ihc] Special Tools, Help?

I'm sorry that this is off (IH) topic, but I can't think of anyone else to
ask...
I have this old mahogany box, containing a stainless steel tool set that I
can't identify. I've posted a picture of it here:

The only lettering is on the bottom of the "base unit" which reads "K&D
4399". No other markings. If anyone on the list knows what this is, or at
least what profession it is associated with, I sure would appreciate a hint.
