[ihc] Re: ihc-digest V7 #340-oil bath to air filter changeout.

Our 1964 Scout 80 with the 152 single barrel Holley originally came with the
oil bath setup that everyone is commenting on. When I decided to switch to a
paper filter but wanted to keep the original appearance I simply cut off the
oil mesh part attached to the underside of the top cover with a hack saw. Some
judicious filing and a Purolator #30057 air filter and I was in business.
When the top cover is tightened down with the wing nut it puts enough pressure
on the rubber outside form of the filter to secure a good fit. For a little
extra safety I put a small ream of lube grease on the rubber portion, both top
and bottom, before tightening the cover. The cover, when correctly installed,
sits up about 1/4" to allow for air intake into the air cleaner. If you have
the old style oil pressure venting setup which went from the filler cap pipe
to the air filter simply get a Stant breather cap from Advance Auto (about
$3.50) and then plug the vent pipe opening into the air cleaner with some silicon,
an old wine cork or the rotted piece of gas neck filler rubber which allows
the gas to dribble out onto your newly painted machine and ruin the paint job.
