[ihc] RHD Power Steering, gasoline smell

Robert, Jim in Mesa (and all the others) thanks for the help.

Robert first, yes I have the straight 6 in my rig, and the LHD box is
being used with a shortened draglink. I will need to get the box
rebuilt (too much damage has probably been done) which has prompted this
whole research effort.

Anyways, it's looking like I'm going to stick with it. What did you do
for a P/S pump? The PO fabricated a custom bracket, which ties me in to
one specific P/S pump. From a '72 IHC pickup, IIRC. And, is there any
way to mount both a compressor pump AND a P/S pump on the AMC 258 using
this setup? I don't have A/C (probably never will in this rig) but it'd
be nice to know the feasability of it.

I am not only intrigued, but I'm very interested in your Ford steering
gear solution. Does that case directly bolt on, with no extra
drilling/fabrication required? From what you described, it would be
cost-prohibitive on an I-6 since the stock gear works. But since my
current leaning is towards getting a second RHD Scout (and selling my
Cherokee) I'm interested. I end up with a V8 in it (since it'll be a
backup delivery rig only) but even if it's a 6, I'll want A/C
(especially here in Florida...double especially in June-July-August)
which might necessitate this option. Any details would be most
appreciated for the future.

Jim in Mesa, in a previous E-mail to me you mentioned that I would be
well advised "to have the box's bore hard chromed then precision honed
to fit the piston." Sounds like a good plan to beef up the gear a bit.
Any ideas on where/who I can go to get it done? I don't have a spare
box right now, but I can get one.

Anyone have any other ideas for beefing up the box?

And I contacted the guy on the BB twice asking about the RHD manual
boxes, with no results. I'll figure it's a lost cause and move on.

Also, the truck smells of gasoline. The choke on the carb was screwed
up, and I finally got around to fixing that a couple of days ago. I
attributed the smell to that. If the truck still has the odor, is there
any advice (beyond "follow your nose") that can be given to help track
it down? My rig lacks some emissions equipment (we don't have testing,
so use that as your base to figure out how much of the stuff I actually
have on here) so is it possible that the exhaust could be putting this
smell out?

Lastly, my e-mail address has changed. Which is why I'm a bit behind it
some of these replies. I can only apologize for my lack of timeliness,
but changing ISPs (even going from dial-up to cable service) is
annoying...and time consuming. My new address is, obvisouly, listed at
the top of the e-mail.

Thanks again, everyone.

Dave
