Stainless seems real unlikely to me. You could check it with a magnet,
austenitic SS typically isn't magnetic. Martensitic SS is magnetic, so no
help there. You *could* use the nitric acid method, but playing with 20%
nitric isn't my idea of a good time ;).

Still haven't found that pic of the PTO air compressor...
