i definitely agree with Jim. you can't go wrong with a TravelAll, and the
1010 is an excellent choice for that. i know mine worked great when it ran.

i've never towed with a normal 1110 TravelAll, so i can't make that
comparison. our 1110 has 1210 suspension and axles. however, it sits a
little higher than i'm comfortable with for good towing, and has a *long*
drop hitch to compensate for the height. it has 4.10 gears and 33" tires,
and doesn't handle nearly as well as my 1010 with 31" tires and 3.73 gears
did, nor does it stop as well despite having the 12"x3" brakes all the way
around. both trucks are 1972, have the same 392 and 727 combo, power
steering and power brakes, air conditioning, compleat identical functioning
emissions equipment, with the factory heavy duty tow package, aux tranny
cooler, and trailer brakes. my 1010 sits lower, rides nicer, handles more
crisply (it has the antisway hardware front and rear where the 1110 has
nothing), and is generally a more comfortable and safer-feeling tow vehicle.
as i said before, it also stops better--those disc brakes up front make a
big difference. thanks to the torsion bars, the front ride height and
stiffness can be adjusted, as well.

the biggest drawback to the 1010 is that that IFS up front can get expensive
in a hurry to get worked on. i paid just under a grand to have my front end
rebuilt in 1995. i was fortunate that the mechanic i selected (after a
little shopping around) used to work for the local IH shop way back when,
and remembered these and knew how to work on them. he's the only guy i had
found in the Fresno Area that knew what he was looking at when i went in for
an estimate. took forever to get the new bushings found and shipped in.

anyway, just my nickel. Jim's got the right idea.
