Some guys use RTV on the bolts. I wouldn't, just because RTV isn't a good
thing to have loose in your crankcase if somebody gets a little overzealous
with it, and it's ability to stand up to a continuous diet of oil is
questionable IMHO. I've had good luck on those bolts with Permatex #2; clean
the bolts off as well as you can, generous application of Permatex #2 on the
threads, and screw em in. Never had one leak yet that I've done that way, I've
used both P#2 and Aviation Form-a-gasket. The holes in the crank are drilled
all the way through on all of the SV engines, so the bolts need to be sealed
or they will leak for sure. I would guess there are a bunch of people who
didn't know that, that were pretty frustrated after a rear seal R and R to
find it still leaks.
