The problem you describe, plain and simple, is that your mechanical advance
mechanism is sticking. You will need to pull the distributor and clean it,
and check the bushings on the advance.

You do not need special wires with the stock IH ignition systems. All the
electronics do is stabilize the circuit at higher rpms. Points systems have
a spark that degrades in size as rpm increases. Electronic systems raise the
rpm at which this is a problem by quite a bit, far out of the IH rpm
capability.
