RE: Shiftless Eric

according to the Crismon book, starting in 1961 the "0" in the middle
indicated the independent suspension "light" half-ton trucks. this trend
apparently continued into the four-digit trucks as well, with the 1000 and
1010 trucks also being torsion-bar front suspensions, untill the coil-spring
suspensions of 1974 and 1975.

as for the third digit, according to Crismons and a couple other sources, it
indicates suspension and body combination packages and there were six
possibilities. a 0 meant basic suspension, a 2 indicates uprated springs, a
3 indicates a school bus with either level 2 or 4 suspension, 4 is for the
heaviest suspension not neccessarily for road-tractor duty, a 5 indicates
road-tractor only and was the heaviest possible option, and a 6 indicates
fire trucks regardless of all other options. 3, 4, and 5 were only
available in the 150 and heavier trucks, as near as i can tell.

i was sure i'd seen a final digit of "1" once or twice, but i see no
evidence of such a thing in Crismon's, and i can't remember where i might
have seen it before, so maybe i imagined it.

i hope this doesn't muddy up the issue too much.
