source for dipsticks[2] (Scout II, 304 w/headers)
---If you recall, I was looking for an alternative to the universal,
flexible dipstick tubing for my Scout II 304 w/headers. I snapped my
original dipstick tubing when I was shaping it to route around the headers.
The PO had mangled the tubing when installing the engine and I hadn't found
that out until I tried to bend it myself. Though it didn't look healthy, I
had no idea it was in as bad a shape as it was until... "SNAP".
---I believe I may have forgotten to mention my finding. A steel dipstick
from a Toyota 22r fit perfectly. I had to cut the mounting bracket at the
center of the mounting hole, and use a piece of 3" x 1" 1/4" flat stock as a
sort of clamp. I drilled the stock to accept the bolt and sandwiched the
mounting bracket on the dipstick tube between it and the header mounting
flange. Not as nice as someone else could do with a welder, but it is
working for me and has been for almost a year now. The dipstick from the 304
sits nicely in the tubing and does not bind at all when inserting it back
into the tubing. It may be a Japanese part, but it is not mounted with a
metric fastener. :D
