Another method of finding TDC and verifying that your timing mark is
correct was recently discussed on the Farmall net.  Insert a solid
object, like a bolt into the spark plug hole,  Then, BY HAND, turn the
engine until the piston touches the bolt and mark the crankshaft pulley. 
Then, remove the bolt and turn the engine backwards almost 2 revolutions,
reinsert the bolt, and again bring the piston up to touch the bolt in the
reverse direction.  Mark the crank again.  TDC should be 1/2 way between
the two marks.

Obviously, you do not turn the engine with the starter with this method. 
You have to get a wrench on the crankshaft pulley bolt and hope the bolt
doesn't come loose when trying to turn the engine backwards.  But if you
suspect your timing mark has shifted or something, this is one method to
find the actual TDC.
