Trans Cooler

I have a transmission cooler on my 78 Scout II.  This appears to be either
original equipment or it was added by somebody (read:  I didn't put it in).
My question is how necessary is it for someone who doesn't tow (or may do so
very rarely)?  I may do some mild 4-wheeling, but no low-gear rock crawling.
My reason for asking is because I've developed some troublesome fluid leaks
that appear to be originating from the cooler.  Can I easily remove it?  Are
there holes to plug in the transmission after removal?  Leave it?
