Steering boot replacement

I have a light truck steering shaft with a torn boot.  I thought when I took
the shaft out the two pieces would slide apart and I could take the boot
off, but they *seem* crimped together.  I couldn't convince myself that it
(or actually the washers in front of it) were supposed to come off over the
steering box end, either.

I didn't try too hard to separate them because of more than one bitter
experience taking things apart that looked like they were supposed to come
apart but weren't really.  So I thought I'd ask first, for a change.
