I have a possible scenario for your shifter. There is a pin that locates the shifter as far rotaional location, in the tranny cover housing that the shifter rides in. If you loose that, you will get the type of respones from the shifter you describe. Take off the tunnel cover. At the base of the shifter, there is a "cap". Unscrew it, the shifter will pull up and out. In the side of the threaded area for the cap is a whole for a pin, the pin rides in the slot in the "shifter ball" at the end of the lever.
