Advice on 392 rebuild
I decided to get second opinion on the 392 improved cooling that I had in my
Traveler.
The mechanics I took it to said "two bad journals, scored cylinder, cracked
head...". A closer look revealed that the damage wasn't as bad as
predicted. They quoted US$2100 for a rebuild.
The head had a crack in the casting, but no where near the water jacket. I
got it repaired. The block has no cracks and the cylinders are ok...not
scores. There is a very minimal ridge. The cylinders are .007" from
standard bore, but are in spec for out of round and taper. I'm getting the
crank ground by a very reputable machine shop in Charleston, SC.
They are also installing new cam bearings.
So, I am going to go with the rebuild.
I've found most of the parts I need via North American Parts. Their catalog
can be downloaded as a .pdf file. I'm going to get a stand from Harbor
Freight Tools.
Do I need to go with oversized rings for cylinders that are .007" out? I
don't think I'll need oversized pistons...and don't plan to bore the block.
I haven't ordered anything yet.
BTW, a remanufactured long block for a 392 improved cooling from Jasper
Engines (http://www.jasperengines.com) was quoted to me as:

Which, as you can see, is pretty expensive, but has a great warantee.
Anyway, just thought I'd pitch my $.02 in.
Any advice on the cylinder wear would be appreciated.
