Hey,

I just had a similar problem.. I thought I had a vacumme leak in the 
power brake vacume canister because it would idle rough, then get 
even rougher when I put my foot on the brake.  However, one night 
when I was driving home I noticed that it idled fine (about 10:00pm) 
at all the stoplights... well when I got home I thought I must be one 
hell of a mechanic since I fixed it without really trying... I  was just 
admireing the smooth lope of a '74 IH 392 in the drive way.. and 
when I turned off the headlight's to go in... wammo rough idle! Turn 
the headlights back on... smooth idle... I havent tried to fix it yet 
but I would guess it's the alternator or voltage regulator...
