Tom,
   I would say that the shift cable is about 24" long. Maybe an inch or
two either way. The slack gets looped toward the back. You really can't
do anything with it forward or back. Up is ok like with a body lift, but
the cable is so rigid that it would kink if the loop wasn't just right.
I know this because I put my shift back together saturday and found I
have to pull the speedo cable off and put it inside the loop because it
is bending the loop down and making shifts hard.
