You're looking at it the wrong way....

You approach dad n' say, "Dad.. I have a challenge for you...." and then
tell him how you're going to cut out the rear wheel wells entirely, chop
the back part of the bed further towards the tailgate, and then you want
him to hammerform a new wheel well for you and section it in.  Up front,
you tell him you're cutting the front fender lip out, and you want him
to do some more hammerforming... for a new steel "flare" that you want
to be *part of* the original fender...

See?  Not "hacking" but... "enhancing"... 

It's a challenge, not a sacrilege!
