Dana 27 rebuild info requested

Ok IHers,

I'm in really uncharted territory here.  I've found out (thanks to Howard)
that the spider gears in the differential are the same regardless of gear
ratio. So it sounds like it would be pretty simple to locate some replacement
gears and just pull the carrier out of the pumpkin and swap out the gears. 
My questions:
1.  Do the axle shafts need to be pulled to get the carrier out?
2.  Are adjustments to shims/spacers going to be necessary when swapping the
spider gears?
3.  I have a PowrLok rear diff. Is there anything weird I sould be aware of?

What I'm really hoping for is to find a duplicate Dana 27 with a 4.27 PowrLock
that I can just swap the whole rear end out. I can handle that!
