T-36's...where to find 'em

I would say the easiest way to find one is to go to a medium and heavy
truck junkyard and find a junked loadstar...The t-36 was usually teamed up
with a two speed rear axle, although sometimes the wider ratio T-35 was
used in more severe applications. It's easy to spot this by looking at the
shift column and if there is (or was) a switch that controlled the rear
two-speed axle, then you are reasonably assured that what you are looking
at is either a T-35 or 36. By manually turning the transmission in 1st
gear (right and up) and counting the revs, you can discern if it's the T-36
if the output yoke turns just over 6 times, or a T-35 if it turns over 7
before making one revolution. Even out of the truck, they are relatively
easy to spot. They are roughly triangular in shape from the back, but with
a big rectangular top. the top of the shifter housing has three (3) capped
protrusions which are where the spring detents are located. The
bellhousing is a massive cast iron affair. looking at the transmission
from the back (yoke output side) you will notice the right hand P.t.o.
cover sticks out about 2 inches very conspicuously. You should be able to
pick up a used one with everything there for about $150 or so...probably
less if the junk guys have had it sitting a long time..make an offer!!!
