Re: Carb rebuild

Joe:

Not much to most of them. A few gaskets, new inlet needle maybe an
accelerator pump needle as well. Best thing you can do is get a book on
your make and model of carb and a 1 gallon can of carb soak cleaner (watch
out, nasty stuff, will literaly take your skin off) and an old coffee can
with nail holes in the bottom, and a rebuild kit for your make model and
series of carb.

Follow the directions carefully. Disassemble the carb making lots of notes
or pictures of small assemblies and which way springs to on and so forth.
Don't force anything and take your time. Watch out for the usual "I can't
get the body off the choke housing" situtation. There are usually "hidden"
screws that the manual and the instructions that come with the rebuild kit
will help you with. Look at the diagrams and note how many fastners it says
there will be. Disassemble as instructed and soak all metal parts in the
cleaner for 24 hours or so. Use the coffee can as a "basket" to lower the
parts into the cleaner and to retrieve them.

Reassemble as instructed, using new gaskets and seats and so forth from the
kit. Set the idle mixture initially as instructed and reinstall on the
Scout. Then, have some fun and do some tuning.

It's a real learning experience.

Also, try and buy a "name brand" rebuild kit. i.e. if you have a Holley,
try and find a Holley kit. They only cost a few dollars more and thier
needles and seats are usually better quality than some off brand kit.
