Re: 304 swap

John and all IHers who have complete engines on their floors,

The engine was complete including the starter, bell housing and transmission, a pos and neg batt cable. It was sitting on the floor on a tire with a floor jack supporting under the altenator bracket. There was no fan.;) I took a battery I had kicking around and even jumped with my Toyota pickup. I clamped the pos from the starter to the pos post of the batt. with the clamp of the cables, I also ran a wire from the (+) of the coil to this clamp. obviously the ground cable to the neg batt post similar to the pos post. I took a piece of bare wire, (a screw driver would work) to short the solenoid to trigger the starter. Once I had it turing over I started pour gas down the carb, a little either here and there and it started to sputter.
Then I pulled the fuel sediment bowl off the fuel pump, cleaned out the crud. I ran a piece of spare fuel line from a 5 gallon gas can to the fuel pump pickup. I made sure fuel was pumping to the carb. Then a couple more turns of the engine, a little more gas down the acrb and it ran on its power.
I revved it up a couple times, let it idle for a minute or so, revved it up again, and shut her down. I was satisfied. I figured if it rolled off my jack I would just pull the cables and it would shut right down. It didn't fall, but it did shut right down when I pulled the neg cable (closest one to me).

That was it.
