At first, I had my doubts.. then I noticed the 1/4" vs. the 1/8" I was 
envisioning... 1/4" would work!  But I have no means of bending it.. nor 
do I have a good method of drilling it.. ;-)

I wonder what a metal fabricator would ding me for such a chunk of 
metal..

Agreed!  1/4" thick steel should do the trick quite nicely.. why didn't I 
think of it, Allan?  That smacks of something I'd do... use the biggest 
and heaviest hunk o' steel possible.. and you'll know it'll do the job. :-)
