3 speed rebuild report

Hi Digesters,

Well, there's good news and bad news. The good news is that I got the T90
detached from the Dana TC 144 transfer case ( PO had literally glued them
together with some kind of red rubbery stuff) and pulled apart. Then I found
out
why there was so much grinding going from 1st to 2nd. The PO, who boasted of
having "rebuilt"
the transmission had completely left out one of the syncronizer rings. So the
bad news is that
the teeth on the 2nd gear on the cluster shaft is really badly worn on the
ends. Before I put it
back together, I'm going to have a mechanic (maybe Joel's uncle) check the
gears and see if they're
useable or if I need to look for another cluster shaft.
I've already got about $200 in parts in it already. Probably would've been
better off getting a
used 3 speed from one of the vendors.
Also, I was really supprised about how I got the cluster shaft back in on the
first try. When I saw those 88 needle
bearings fall out when I disassembled the shaft I was sure I'd be taking the
parts to a shop to have it put
back together. And thanks to digester Myron Ware for the parts list on his web
page that really helped me
get the parts I needed with a minimum of hassle (still waiting on a pressure
plate to be shipped in from NAPA's
Dallas distributor).
Well, that's about it for now. Hopefully, I can use the old gears and the PP
will come in this week
and everything will go back together by next weekend.
