Re: Gear Slop & Weekend Plans?

At 17:06 on 12/30/98 jlandry@domain.elided (John A. Landry) uttered the
following:

: >Does anyone know the mechanical / technical term for the 'play' or 'slop'
: >between two gears?
:
: Usually the term "backlash" is used when talking about gears, although I've
: heard it also referenced as simply "lash."

"Lash" came to mind but I wasn't sure.

I know that in electronics, the effect you get when, say, you adjust the squelch
on a receiver and you have to re-adjust the knob farther one way or the other
before it opens or closes (farther than you had to adjust it going the opposite
direction) is referred to as "hysteresis" - but I've never heard my mechanic say
that word! To think about it, I'm not sure I can either! :-)

Lash or backlash will work.

Gracias!
