     Dan,
     
     Even with low fluid, it still sounds like a bad piston in the M/C. 
      Try stepping on the pedal ever so gently and see if you can get 
     the pedal to 'creep' to the floor.  If so then it's a bad M/C.  If 
     it grabs when stomp on it firmly, and creeps, you need a new one.  
     If it leaks both ways you need a MC worse that before.  If it 
     never 'creeps' at all, ever, then you need to get the gremlins out 
     of the scout with exorcism.

Joel,
   Actually, I checked the level in the MC today when I got home and
found that the rear cylinder was empty and the front was low. This 
doesn't explain ow the pedal got progressive;ly harder on the drive home 
with o fluid in the MC.
